The Story of the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and of the Land Ordnance Engineering Branch. Born at Owen Sound, Ontario in 1909, he was educated at Bishop Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario. He started in journalism as a reporter for the Toronto Globe. In 1928, later working at the Regina Leader-Post, the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix before joining the staff of the Winnipeg Free Press in 1936.
His employment was interrupted by service in the Canadian military during the Second World War. He fought at Sicily, where he was wounded. In the Allied invasion of Europe he was in charge of public relations and was responsible for planning the photographic coverage of the Normandy landings.
