Civil War Model 1864 McClellan Saddle Seat: This war time production M1864 McClellan Saddle Seat offers a good opportunity to appreciate the design, workmanship and durability of the foundation of these saddles, and this specimen is of sufficient condition to be restored with the proper leather straps and fittings for an economic addition to your collection. This specimen is complete with both stirrup strap loops, the pommel and cantle arcs, and the majority of the original rawhide covering is present. The wood is solid with no deterioration, and all of the form of the tree is present, intact, and still solid with no loose parts. The rawhide covering has separated at the seams, pulled back from the edges and has worn away in some spots, but still is overall present and as can be seen in the photos, is still retaining most of its form. The design was based on the Spanish tree saddles in wide use in the United States at the time, and which had seen US Army use, although McClellan claimed that it was based on Hussar saddles.The lighter colors where for enlisted men only and more ornate belonged to officers.
