Best Years of Their Lives by Trevor Royle, Michelle Joseph Ltd., 1986
More than two million men were called up for National Service, conscripted into the Army, RAF and Royal Navy between 1945 and 1963. At the tender age of 18, for most conscripts it was the first time they had left home and family. During their two years in the forces, they would serve the far reaches of Britain's crumbling Empire. Others were posted closer to home, fighting a burgeoning Cold War.
Trevor Royle is a broadcaster and author specialising in the history of war and empire. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was a member of the Scottish Government’s Advisory Panel for Commemorating the First World War.
