Churchill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward Spalding and Emma Bell (Blaine) Churchill. He attended Smith Academy in Missouri and the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1894 and became an editor of the Army and Navy Journal. He resigned from the navy to pursue a writing career. While he would be most successful as a novelist, he was also a published poet and essayist

Poor condition. Hardcover is sound with worn lower leading corners, bumped upper leading corner of front board and softened spine ends. Age spotting to page block. Foot of page block is a bit grubby. Gilt head of page block. Front and back inner paper hinges are torn; age spotting to endpapers and fore-edges of some pages; pages are lightly yellowed; contents otherwise in good condition with sound binding.
