A former controller of BBC Scotland who now lives in Potters Bar has published the story of one Scottish battalion's Second World War. Publishers say The Elephant at War is the story of "Jocks not generals", focusing not on tactics and strategy but on what the 2nd battalion Seaforth Highlanders achieved -- in spite of appalling casualties.

The author, Andrew Todd, recognises the impact of regimental tradition -- and of a Scottish upbringing -- on the morale of men who never intended to be soldiers.
